Samsung details its plans for Android 4.4 KitKat

It’s been eight months since Samsung sent out their first Android 4.4 KitKat update and they are still in the process of updating their devices. Let’s take a look at what has been updated recently and what is still scheduled to be updated in 2014. Earlier this month, we saw Samsung release an Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to AT&T variants of the Galaxy S4 Mini. We’ve also seen Samsung rolling out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the international Galaxy Note 3 Neo, the international Galaxy S4, the international Galaxy Note 3 and the international Galaxy Note 2. Samsung has been busy lately and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. There are dozens of Samsung devices that were released in 2013 and Samsung is knocking them out one by one.

Samsung has detailed its Android KitKat plans for a slew of devices, bringing version 4.4.2 to a bunch of its products and confirming Android 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 for others. The Korean company is often slower than some of its rivals (for example, both HTC and Sony’s 4.4.3/4 plans are well underway), but it is nice to see Samsung dealing with so many of its devices in one swoop. However, Samsung has still not detailed in full when Android 4.4.4 will be available, although the company did say that the soon to be rolled out Galaxy Alpha will get the latest of Google’s software. We also presume that the Galaxy Note 4 that will launch at IFA next week will also get at least Android 4.4.3. While Samsung is keeping quiet about Android 4.4.4 specifics, carriers around the world are confirming that the Galaxy S5 flagship has been approved for the update. Some carriers, such as Australian brand Optus say that 4.4.4 for the S5 could land “within the coming days”. The LTE-A Galaxy S5 variant in Europe is also inline to get Android 4.4.4, with the firmware imminent in the United Kingdom. Canadian company Rogers has given us an idea of the Android plans for Samsung devices in North American by saying Android 4.4.3 for the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 is now available. The carrier has also said that the Galaxy Mega Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S3 Mini, and Galaxy Note 8.0 are all getting Android 4.4.3 soon.
