No iPad Tethering For iPhone

AT&T’s new 3G data plans have led some people to question whether this could mean tethering for iPads. The answer? Still a firm no, although AT&T says it’s really an Apple issue.

It seemed logical to me from day one that the iPad would be a device you could carry around with you and access the web at will, but for iPhone users the added value would be the option to tether.

To this day, the only way to tether an iPad to an iPhone is through jailbreaking. Of course, the iPad has only been on sale for 60 days, and iPhone OS 4.0 is coming soon, and the new iPhone 4G is due out on Monday, so nothing is ever certain.

AT&T is right, if they allow tethering but it’s not possible to tether two devices, that’s most likely an APple issue, unless they’ve cooked up a deal between the two of them.

But if Apple is withholding the ability to tether an iPad, then it can be for only one reason, to promote a more expensive iPad model.

I’m hoping there’s some technical reason for the lack of tethering, rather than some decree from Apple’s High Priest, his holy Jobsness, or pure and simple financial motivation.
