VLC is one of the most popular third-party media players for computers thanks to its built-in support for a plethora of media formats and its insane amount of customization options. However, that success hasn’t exactly carried over to mobile devices, particularly iOS-based products. VLC has been added to and pulled from the App Store numerous times, but it looks like the app may be coming back for good early next year.

The VLC app seems to have a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the iTunes App Store. The app was first announced several years ago before it was pulled, and it was only last year that the app made its triumphant return to the iTunes App Store before it was pulled again shortly after the release of iOS 8. It is unclear as to why the developers had decided to pull the app, but the good news is that it looks like it will be making a comeback. This is according to the lead developer Felix Paul Kuehne who posted on the VLC forums that the app will be returning and that the updated version had already been submitted to Apple for approval. Responding to a question asking whether the app will return, Kuehne wrote, “It will be again, but probably early next year due to the iTunes Connect holiday shutdown.” Like we said it is unclear as to why the app was even pulled following iOS 8, but either way for those who did not get the opportunity to download the app, you will have to wait until 2015 to do so.
