Not all architecture is perfectly constructed to bring natural sunlight in each room as we may wish them to and for those who suffer through the lack of our mega source of vitamin D in the sky during the winter months, we know how much we can miss the sun and all of its shining glory (can you tell I miss summer already?) Some more than others need the glow of the sun to help with their moods and even increase productivity, since we all know how it makes us feel when the sun goes down at 5pm.
Scientists based out of London have designed technology that transmits natural sunlight through the use of pipes, known as a Daylight System. Using this system along with a parabolic dish concentrator, the light is than able to travel through pipes to any destination you desire. The Sun Portal system is made to track the sun even on cloudy days and then collect the rays and release them through Sunlight Relay Lenses.
Sunportal not only claims to have the highest transmitting rates for any duration and direction, asserting no other sun transmitting-like product on the market can beat their longevity or their prices. They also state that it is due to their Sunportals being generated using the latest IR-cut coating technology that prevents any heat from being lost or gained, therefore cutting costs towards heating and air-conditioning; overall being better for the environment and your wallet.
Installing Sunportals have already begun in Hong Kong, yet these ingenious forms of providing that extra boost of sunlight in rooms and offices can provide a more natural source of lighting as well as decrease the amount of unnaturally forced lighting that is necessary to light a room or office building. I know I would prefer to have sunlight over florescent lights any day, wouldn’t you?
