Sam Altman Confirms OpenAI Product Delays Due to Capacity Challenges

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that the capacity challenges in the image-generation tool of ChatGPT may cause product delay. The CEO said

“We are getting things under control, but you should expect new releases from OpenAI to be delayed, stuff to break, and for service to sometimes be slow as we deal with capacity challenges,” Altman wrote. “Working as fast we can to really get stuff humming.”

In the last week of March, OpenAI launched a new image generator feature in the AI chatbot which could create Studio Ghibli-style images. This newly launched feature could do pictures editing, text rendering and spatial representation. Though these features of ChatGPT may depict an evolved and advanced AI tech capability of the platform, it may cause copyright issues. However, this newly launched feature caused capacity challenges for the platform. The CEO informed the users that the AI company is trying to catch up with this challenge to carry on the service but there is an unspecified delay.

Currently, ChatGPT has halted the image-generation tool for free users and disabled video-generation features for the new users of Sora. The newly launched feature of ChatGPT to generate public figures and racial features sparked controversy over the biased approach of this AI tool. However, the company assured its users that

“We’re shifting from blanket refusals in sensitive areas to a more precise approach focused on preventing real-world harm. The goal is to embrace humility: recognizing how much we don’t know, and positioning ourselves to adapt as we learn.”

On Monday, Sam Altman announced that the AI-powered chatbot has 500 million weekly users and 20 million paying subscribers. In 2024, the platform had 300 million users and 15.5 paid users. This increase in number in just three months highlights the popularity and hype of the AI platform. However, the capacity challenges may also cause skepticism among investors about OpenAI’s capabilities.
