World’s smallest camera weighs under an ounce

microcamera imageHammacher Schlemmer, America’s longest running catalog, has just introduced a camera that’s fit for Derek Zoolander. Being no bigger than a fingertip, it probably won’t be winning any awards for its functionality, but it’s said to be the world’s smallest camera.

The aptly named “World’s Smallest Camera” measures just over one inch in all dimensions and weighs only half an ounce. It’s just big enough for a human finer to snap a picture with a touch of the miniscule shutter button.

“Although The World’s Smallest Camera is only slightly larger than a marble, it takes still images and records video just like much larger cameras,” said Hammacher Schlemmer’s General Manager, Fred Berns.

The camera features automatic focus and has a 2 megapixel image sensor that captures JPEG photographs at 1600 x 1200 resolution and AVI video at 30 frames-per-second with 640 x 480 resolution. Images are saved on a 2 GB micro SD card. On a full charge, The World’s Smallest Camera provides up to 30 minutes of operation.

Japan’s Chobi Mini Digital Camera also lays claim to be the world’s smallest camera by volume, as it measures 1.7 inches by 1.1 inches by less than half an inch. Nevertheless, neither camera is all that practical. And, considering the World’s Smallest Camera is priced a $99.95, it’s also small on value.
