Using Netflix or YouTube on crappy mobile data doesn’t have to suck

Those of us with slow and/or limited mobile data know the struggle of trying to watch anything on Netflix or YouTube, but if you have an Android device then this doesn’t have to be a problem. Opera Max has offered ways to save your data for a while, but now the app has been updated to make your videos load more quickly and use less data without losing quality.

Data saving tool Opera Max has been updated to reduce buffering when you’re watching YouTube and Netflix videos on your Android device. The company says it can compress videos by roughly 50 percent on average before beaming them to users’ devices. The latest version aims to help users save data while they stream videos, without any significant loss in quality. It achieves this with a new approach to compressing and delivering HTTPS video, and it works on both Wi-Fi and mobile connections. Opera says it’s working to enable data saving for other HTTPS video services in the coming months. The app enabled data compression for devices on Wi-Fi connections back in May.
