Pinterest now has 100 million monthly active users

It may have taken Pinterest longer than the likes of Facebook and Twitter to reach the 100 million monthly active users milestone, but that doesn’t really matter, because it’s an impressive feat nonetheless. The company confirmed earlier yesterday that it had reached the milestone, which will definitely help it convince skeptics that it deserves the massive $11 billion valuation that it’s managed to achieve.

Pinterest, the online scrapbook site valued at $11bn, has surpassed 100m monthly active users, with growth accelerating as it translates the site into more languages and opens international offices. The site loved by cooks, crafters and retailers has doubled its number of users in the past 18 months, with 45 per cent of them coming from outside the US. Pinterest started serving non-English-speaking markets 12 months ago. Co-founder Evan Sharp said the San Francisco-based start-up had been focused on making the service locally relevant in different countries. Unlike many social networks which are about communicating with friends, Pinterest users interact with products which differ by country. That means it takes more effort to expand beyond borders. “We’ve been called a social network. But we’re solving a different problem, we’re a visual search engine for your phone,” Mr Sharp said.
