Amazon Introduced AI-powered ‘Interest’ to Recommend Products

In line with its customer-friendly services, Amazon introduced ‘Interest’, an  AI-powered feature that automatically finds new products for shopaholics that match their passions and hobbies. On 25 March, the Vice President of Personalization at Amazon wrote in a blog post

‘With Interests, you can create personalized shopping prompts tailored to your interests, price limits, and preferences, from mainstream to niche, using everyday language…Once you’ve created your prompt, Interests will do the work for you, continuously scanning Amazon’s store and proactively notifying you about newly available and relevant products, restocks, and deals that align with your interests.’

The platform announced that this new AI feature is available to a ‘small subset of US customers’. They can access this exciting feature through the Amazon app on iOS or Android and their mobile website. The online store also assured that this feature will soon be available to the rest of US customers in coming months. Amazon users can find themselves in the small subset list by tapping the ‘Me’ tab in their app. The ‘Interest’ feature has been added to selected accounts.

Interest based on LLM

This new AI feature for shoppers is based on large language models (LLM) that automatically translates everyday language into queries. The traditional search engines can process and turn these queries into product recommendations. The online shopping platform explained the recommendation feature to its users as

“For example, for “natural makeup products for summer glow from top brands,” Interests utilizes the LLM’s world knowledge to translate “top brands” into specific brands in the makeup category to make relevant recommendations. Interests works around the clock to find any new items that match your prompt, and it notifies you on any noteworthy updates.”

Amazon AI Capabilities

Amazon is an online shopping platform that aims to make shopping easier and more fun. It is the fourth most popular site in the US, with 3.25 billion visitors in 2024. Currently, the platform is innovating in AI-powered capabilities like Rufus, AI Shopping Guides, and review highlights that make product discovery simple for users.

AI for Shoppers

Amazon is not the only shopping platform assisting its users through AI generated suggestions. Recently, Google also launched ‘Vision Match’ that enables users to describe a garment they imagine buying. The AI feature then suggests matches based on the description.
