Tesla is planning to unveil at least two new cars in March

Even though the Tesla Model S is arguably the best electric vehicle on the market at the moment, its not exactly the most-affordable car, which is why the Model 3 is going to be such a big deal. Just like the Chevrolet Volt, the Model 3 is expected to have a price of around $35,000 when it’s unveiled in March, which puts it well within reach for most drivers, but there are some reports Tesla is planning to launch multiple versions of the sedan. Electrek reported on Thursday that Tesla has at least two new cars to unveil at the March event, but we don’t know how the second car will differ from the Model 3.

Tesla’s next vehicle will be the Model 3, a mass-market car that’s expected to be priced around $35,000. The design will be unveiled in March, but we now have greater indications that the Model 3 will actually be a platform for two vehicles — a small sedan and a compact SUV — and possibly more. At Electrek, Seth Weintraub offers some speculation about Model 3 pricing and configurations. This follows comments that Tesla’s CTO, JB Straubel, made last year, when he said that the Model 3 would be the basis for a variety of different vehicles. A big question for Tesla followers is whether the Model 3 will continue the company’s pattern of introducing a relatively luxurious new vehicle, as it did with the $100,000-plus Model X SUV last year, or whether the Model 3 will really be an electric car for the masses. General Motors rolled out its all-electric Bolt this month, with plans to get the car to market this year. That’s well ahead of the Model 3, which won’t arrive until 2017. The Bolt’s interior, as we found out when we test drove it in Las Vegas, is perfectly nice but hardly luxurious. But GM will be able to sell the Bolt for $30,000, after tax rebates and government credits. The Bolt will be the only EV in the market that has range comparable with Tesla’s vehicles. Tesla range, given that it requires a big and expensive battery, has always come at a steep price.
